PhD? Project

Simply put, my PhD? project asks the following question: “what happens in the course of an informatisation process, transforming a society, that is not (yet) informatised?“ Are people, technologies, sociocultural patterns transformed, and if so, how? In order to deal with such a question one has to do two things: first, to develop an analytical vocabulary allowing to focus on all of the three components being mentioned above at once; second, one has to do research to tackle the problem. I therefore attempt to develop heuristic tools being appropriate for the observation/description of sociocultural evolutionary processes driven by ICT from an in/between point of view, accompanied by a conceptual shift from action to inter-activity. Central to the perspective I propose is the notion of cultural programmes. In my fieldwork, I consequently pose the question: „how are new technological programmes connected to „pre-existing“ cultural ones?“ Also, I am planning to do research on the software localization project Urdu Localization Project (ULP) at the Center for Research in Urdu Language Processing (CRULP), FAST University, Lahore/Pakistan. The ULP is part of the PAN Localization Project, trying to foster computerisation processes in a couple of Asian countries. I am interested in how these processes unfold and attempt to include several dimensions of observation: technological, material, linguistic, semantic, semiotic, discoursive, political etc. As I look at software localization as being part of what might be called „global informatisation“, the whole project focuses theoretically and empirically on the production of the conditions for the emergence of global micro structures, understood as co-evolutionary process between technological and human forms, and cultural programmes.
